DEVELOPMENTAL EDITS

Focusing on story, character, and big picture problems, these edits are typically called "story edits" because they will involve rewriting the story partially or completely. If you're unsure what type of edit you need, it is likely a developmental edit. This is the most popular form of edit for those seeking out traditional publishing. I highly recommend getting a developmental edit before querying agents or getting copy edits. Once you get copy edits, you don't want to change any part of the story or your rewrites will need to be edited again.

A market-targeted edit, like the one you will get from EY EDITS, will focus on what is popular or standard in the traditional market. This is necessary if you want to get an agent, and it's going to make your book sell better if you're self-publishing. As a former agent, a keen understanding of the market is my expertise. Let me help you create a story that will captivate your readers from start to finish, while still catering to your vision and story desires.

This edit includes a query letter review or blurb edit as well as a publishing guide with all of my insider information to help you move seamlessly through this very confusing process.

COPY EDITING

Focusing on writing and in-depth story issues, copy edits are more specific to your writing, leaving out the story problems. You can combine copy edits with developmental edits to get an idea of how you're writing and what can be changed in the story at the same time. This is a great way to evaluate your story and learn from an editor. While working with a mentor, this is the type of edit you would receive. It's similar to the MFA mentor-mentee process. If you're looking to get one edit done, this is the preferred route, and the type of edit that most of clients have used before signing with an agent.

A straight copy edit will not address story problems and should be a step you take only before self-publishing. If you are intending to get an agent, and you came looking for an editor to help you do so, you should get the combo copy-developmental or a developmental edit. For a straight copy edit, here are some of the things EY EDITS will address:

Basic grammar, styling, and formatting

Adjust paragraph spacing as needed for clarity and flow.

Shorten sentences by removing conjunctions if necessary for clarity and flow.

Connect sentences by adding conjunction if necessary for clarity and flow.

Make a note of or cut unnecessary words, sentences, or paragraphs.

Enhance sentences through reorganization, new word choice, different conjunctions.

Change punctuation when necessary for clarity and flow.

Make a note of confusing, low-quality, or offensive descriptions, similes, and metaphors.

Ensure characters are portrayed realistically through dialogue and narration.

Point out any confusing scene descriptions or lack of clear scenery.

Point out where the language can be improved for a better reading experience if rewriting is required, with suggestions on how to do this. For example: “I think you can add a simile or metaphor about the temporal nature of flowers to better portray the motif of life and death.”
